Members of Kodaline:
Stephen Garrigan - Singer
Mark Prendergast - Guitar
Vinny May Jr. - Drums
Jason Boland - Bass guitar
Steve and Mark first met in the church choir when they were eight, in their home hown Swords, Ireland. A few years later, at the age of fourteen, they met Vinny. They spend their youth with making music, skating in the local skate park and hanging around in each others houses.
Steve, Mark and Vinny formed two music bands together: 'Radar love' and '21 demands'. As '21 demands' they participated in the Irish talent show 'you're a star' in 2006. They stranded on a second place, however their single 'give me a minute' went up to number one in the Irish charts. '21 demands' was the first band ever in the Irish charts who reached to number one place without being signed by a record label. They were only 15 at the time and still in school.
A few weeks later they got an offer for a record deal but they refursed. They said they were too young and weren't ready yet. also: their single 'give me a minute' wasn't good enough and missed some heart and soul.
here's what they said about participating on a talent show: 'It's a good way to see what the music business is all about and to be away from school every once in a while, but it wasn't the right choice for us because we wanted freedom with our songs and with our songwringing.'
It was in 2011 (valentines day) that they met Jason Boland through mutual friends. It took them a while before realizing that he played bass guitar. The four of them started a band and called themselves 'Kodaline'.
'The kodaline EP' was released in 2012 and contained four songs ('All I want', 'Pray', 'In a perfect world' and 'Loose your mind'). The song 'All I want' became a hit.
They said: 'It was never our plan to release 'All I want' as a first single, it just sort of happened. Some radio stations in Ireland and the UK found it and started to play it.'
What does the name 'Kodaline' mean?
Steve, Mark, Jason and Vinny where looking for a proper band name vut weren't satisfied with what they came up with, stating: 'You can try and find a name that means a lot to you, but when you google it, there are already thousands of references to that name. We just wanted someting that wasn't taken. After a night with a lot of beers, we came up with the name 'Kodaline'. I don't remember who it was who came up with the name but we liked it and decided that that was going to be it.'
'So the name 'Kodaline' means nothing to us, but that's what we wanted. We just hope that people will associate the band with the music we make.'
Who is the one in charge, choosing which songs are on the album?
Steve quoted in an interview that it's their manager who descides which songs get on the album and which don't. 'We just write the music, the rest is up to him'. In the same interview Steve said that he thought 'love like this' wasn't a good choice for a single and that he didn't really love the song that much. Now it's one of the songs that he loves playing live to an audience.
